I visited my folks today. Since mom had been sick for the past few weeks, I was full of concern for their well being. I just couldn't wait to hug them. The three hour car ride to their home was filled with anticipation for what condition they might be in. I was pleasantly surprised to find them both in good spirits. They appeared to be just as happy to see me and came running with big smiles and hugs all around.
As the visit unfolded, I found myself observing their interaction and thinking about their behaviors. I soon found myself wondering what characteristics I might have inherited from each of them. Mom is feisty, determined, gutsy, creative, has a sense of style, adventuresome spirit, is a great cook and mediocre housekeeper. She likes her THINGS and seems to thrive in clutter. Possesses a great sense of color, fashion, and artistic ability.
I watched dad working on his puzzle and saw the same look of concentration that I've seen in photos of myself. Interesting. Dad has an orderly sense, is particular about his stuff, likes to sit quiet and think his thoughts but when involved in a conversation, he likes to talk about himself and his accomplishments.
So what did I inherit from him? Persistence, orderliness, procrastination, perfection, eye for details, care of plants & nature, sense of time or lack of it? Music appreciation. Laughter and great hugs!
At their advancing ages, 86 & 88, they are determined to stay together and enjoy their independence. They seem to manage quite nicely. They have their routines. They love each other in their own way. And after 66 years of marriage, who will argue with that?
I am thankful for these parents who are a good example of graceful living and are a tough act to follow! God bless them.
