Sacred Geometry in a Quilt
The mandala’s beautiful circular design has an intriguing illumination and radiance about it that draws you in for a closer look. What does it mean? Why are you so attracted to this art? What keeps you coming back for another look?
It is the mystery of the mandala. The sacred geometry that draws you into the core of your being. The design resonates with your inner voice. The 'I Am' that you long to hear whenever you take the time to sit quiet and listen to your breath. It is the voice that guides your journey in this adventure of LIFE.
Touched With a Vision
I recall the day that the MUSE first touched my soul like it was yesterday. Attending my first Open Studio, I didn't really know what to expect. I arrived prepared with a black sketch book, some colored pencils, and a portfolio of photographs of some of my Art quilts. With no real expectations, I was there to observe and hopefully get some confidence and guidance on basic elements of art. Looking around the room it was easy to see that painters were in the majority here. I wasn’t sure where or how my art quilts would fit in.
Through the years I’d taken many sewing classes on technique, and quilting classes on design and execution. Leaving the art class that day, as I walked through the halls of the elementary school, I casually observed the art exhibit made by the second grade students. My fascination with circles drew me in to take a closer look at this particular display. I discovered that these kaleidoscope designs were actually the names of the children made in a circular form. How interesting!
AHA - the Muse touched me with a vision. I wondered how I could create hidden words and names into my designs. And so began my journey on a new artistic path, creating Message Mandalas known as LoveLights.*
My fascination with circles began in 1999, with a near-death experience. During my recovery from a ruptured appendix, the mandalas found me. I started to see circles everywhere I looked. Being a spiritual seeker, I began to study and search for their meaning and message in my life.
At that time, I was an avid seamstress turned quilter turned fiber artist. My mother had taught me to sew at an early age -a gift that has lasted my entire life. It was only a matter of time before the mandala design found it's way into my art quilts. The path of my journey took a new direction and LoveLights© and a mission were born.
When I first began creating the circular designs, I used a reverse appliqué technique that was very effective. This technique, however, proved to be tedious and very time consuming. With a desire to infuse the art with more illumination and to create more pieces in my limited studio time, I began exploring other design possibilities.
When I discovered the oil paint sticks, I knew that I had found my answer. Through experimentation, I’ve taught myself to create a stencil, paint on fabric, and then embellish the design using my traditional sewing machine. I am now able to design and paint a quilt in half the time it took to execute the appliqué method. And recently, I have added beadwork embellishments to further enhance the traditional mandala appearance.
A form of sacred geometry, the circular designs are often used for meditation and healing, representing the whole of the universe and our place in it. We are drawn to the beautiful mandala designs when looking for the deeper meaning of life and our existence. Mandalas aide us in connecting with our Divine inner Light.
CALM THE BLUES ~ LOOK WITHIN
Carl Jung, a Swiss psychiatrist who changed the way we think about the human psyche, is the inspiration for this particular quilt, “Calm the Blues ~ Look Within.” His quote, “Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakes” gave me the idea that the best way to conquer the blues or anxiety is to look for our strength within. I hoped Thinking that this could inspire anyone who looked at this LoveLight and studied it for its hidden messages.
On close inspection of this art quilt, once you know the secret of how to find the words or messages, you can find: ‘Let Go’, ‘Faith’, ‘Believe’, ‘Love’, ‘Trust’, ‘Wish’, and other words floating on the blue background.
* 'Colorful ART lifts the Spirit’. It is my mission to spread Joy and Love by creating and sharing these LoveLights©. My hope is that you will be touched by the work of my hands.
